What About ‘Bunheads’?

It’s been more than a month since The Lying Game aired its second season finale and six months since the series wrapped production. But ABC Family is yet to make a decision on the future of the show based of Sara Shepard’s books. Complicating things is the fact that the options on the cast are up this week. I hear ABC Family asked The Lying Game producer Warner Horizon to extend the options on cast as the cable network wants to see how its summer series launch before making a decision on The Lying Game. That is easier said than done as the extension process involves a slew of actors with virtually no assurances that the extra hold will lead to a renewal. I hear all actors passed on Warner Horizon’s initial offer. I hear the efforts focused on the leads, with Alexandra Chando, now signed, and Blair Redford, who is in negotiations. The rest of the actors are in various stages of talks with the studios. I hear the hold is only until July, so ABC Family will have to make a decision shortly after its new and returning scripted series debut (between May 29 and June 11). Also unknown is the status is of Chuck Pratt who developed The Lying Game as serves as executive producer/showrunner. While the majority of the writers on the show have three-year deals, I hear Pratt’s contract was up at the end of Season 2. “Each of us will have to make some decisions in the event of a pick-up,” Pratt wrote in a email to the show’s crew. “I’m sure our circumstances at that time will affect our decision. Know this, though. We all love this show, and if this is to be its last run, we want to be there. Once again, we wait…”

But as frustrating ABC Family’s silence has been for The Lying Game team, they are not alone. Also anxiously awaiting word on renewal is fellow bubble series Bunheads whose freshman season ended more than two months ago. ABC Family will likely make a decision on both series around the same time. While Amy Sherman Pallandino’s Bunheads has been garnering stronger critical notices, the two series have been on par in total viewers (1.7 million in Live+7), and The Lying Game has done better in the younger demos, 2.2 vs. 1.4 in F12-34 and 1.7 vs. 1.3 in F18-34.

Charisma Carpenter is very busy these days, and I had the opportunity to sit down with the actress on her recent trip to NYC. Best known for playing Cordelia Chase on Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the role she tells me was her favorite to play!), Charisma talked openly about her charity involvement, past and present projects, and what’s next for her.

Fans will be happy to hear that she still keeps in touch with a few friends from her Buffy/ Angel days, including actress Julie Benz, Alyson Hannigan and her husband Alexis Denisof (both on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother).

More recently, Carpenter has gained more fans and recognition for playing Rebecca Sewell on ABC Family’s The Lying Game. Although there is still no word on whether or not show will be renewed for another season, the fans (myself included) remain hopeful.

I think what I enjoy the most is… from an actress’ point of view… the challenge of keeping her grounded and not becoming over-the-top, diabolical, or making her, or portraying her in a way that is insane…” she said, describing what she enjoys about playing Rebecca. “I really don’t want her to go to that place. I want her to, and I think the producers are really good at helping me scale that back, and you know, keep that in check. I think that’s the best thing, just trying to find that balance, is a challenge as an actress.

Charisma Carpenter is adding her own dash of deceit to ABC Family’s The Lying Game as Rebecca Sewell, the scandal-clad biological mama to identical twins Emma and Sutton. With the season finale just weeks away, we caught up with the actress, who seems lovely, rational and totally not Rebecca-like, to get the scoop on her controversial character, her upcoming Investigation Discovery series Surviving Evil and charitable passion projects.

OK!: This show has so many twists and turns, does anything surprise you at this point?
Charisma Carpenter: I think it speaks to my naiveté, I do get surprised when I shouldn’t. I was really shocked when I read the script and Kristin served Ted the divorce papers. I was shocked when Alec decided he had feelings for Kristin. I’m constantly being shocked, like, wait a minute, there’s another bad person? And it’s not good when Alec’s shadiness is diminished compared to Rebecca. Now I’m really concerned and shocked by my character’s level of shadiness. She’s at an all-time low. She’s nothing but shadow at this point. And I feel a little defensive as the person playing her because I want my character to be likeable. I get a little nervous but, then again, the most memorable characters tend to be the evil ones, or at least that’s what I tell myself at night.

OK!: You tend to get cast as the bad girl a lot, do you mind it?
CC: Nice girls finish last. That’s boring. I’m really okay with being cast the way that I am. It’s flattering just to get a job so I’m not going to complain, for sure.

A 13-year-old boy that The Lying Game‘s Charisma Carpenter (Rebecca Sewell) met in Uganda has inspired her to give and encourage others to do so too. Right before she started working on TLG, she went abroad to see a well built that she had helped donate to the Bethlehem Parents School. That’s where she met Dennis and bonded with the young student. Through her correspondence with him and the faculty since then, she discovered that the school was really suffering and could only afford for the 653 students to only eat once a day. The beds were also in really poor condition and Charisma decided something needed to happen.

“It’s amazing how life is,” Charisma told us. “You go in there for a well and end up adopting a school.” She is organizing a fundraiser event to help raise $10,000 to replace existing dilapidated bunk beds and mattresses as well as purchase additional bunk beds and mattresses for those orphans currently sleeping on the ground.

The event “Bands for Beds” will happen at 9 pm on Friday, January 18 at Dim Mak Studios in Los Angeles. There is a suggested minimum $20 “donation” cover at the door.
