Here’s the honest-to-God truth: ABC Family has picked up The Lying Game for a second season, the network announced Tuesday.

The series is slated to return with new episodes this winter. But will Charisma Carpenter’s Rebecca — who was revealed to be twins Emma and Sutton’s biological mother in the season finale — be back?

“I’m there if they’ll have me!” Carpenter told TVLine last month. As for what the future holds, star Alexandra Chando teased that “based on the cliffhanger in the finale, there’s definitely going to be a shift in the story. And because of that, the show could take on a whole new direction.”

“Veronica Mars” has been absent from TV screens since it ended its three-season run in 2007. Until now.

Soapnet aired a marathon of the late, great series on Sunday (April 15), and begins airing a daily two-hour block of “Veronica” at 5 p.m. ET Monday. And yes, we’ve worn out our DVD sets of the show and streamed episodes online, but there’s something about having the show on television again that just makes us a little bit happier.

Re-watching the pilot, it’s amazing how self-assured it is. We find out in Kristen Bell’s opening voiceover that her after-school job is “tailing philandering spouses or investigating false injury claims,” but the show takes its time in doling out Veronica’s rather eventful back story. For the first eight minutes or so, about all we know is that Veronica is an outcast at school whose dad used to be the sheriff and had a bad breakup with her rich ex-boyfriend, Duncan (Teddy Dunn).

It’s also pretty great to look at. Director Mark Piznarski gives the show a really palpable film noir feel — it’s probably the darkest-looking show about a high school girl ever, and it signals that this is not going to be your typical teen soap. Even before the story gets to Lily Kane’s murder.

We could spill oceans of pixels talking about how great Kristen Bell is as Veronica, and about how wonderful her relationship with her dad (Enrico Colantoni) is, but in the interest of saving space: She absolutely owns the role from minute one. We can’t imagine anyone else playing it.

Since it’s now been close to eight years since the pilot was filmed, “Veronica Mars” is also a great show with which to play Spot the Soon-to-Be Famous Actor in the cast. Amanda Seyfried has a semi-regular part as the murdered Lily Kane in Season 1 (appearing mostly in flashbacks). Future Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain appears in episode 7, and Max Greenfield, Krysten Ritter, Dianna Agron and Leighton Meester, among others, all have guest roles.

There’s also “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” connection: Alyson Hannigan and Charisma Carpenter played, respectively, Logan’s (Jason Dohring) adopted sister and Dick Casablancas’ (Ryan Hansen) new stepmom.

(“VM” creator Rob Thomas and writer-producers John Enbom and Dan Etheridge would go on to co-create “Party Down” with Paul Rudd and populate the show with a host of alums, including Hansen, Ken Marino, Adam Scott and Jane Lynch, who had guest roles in Season 1 of “Veronica.” Bell, Colantoni, Dohring, Daran Norris and several other “VM” actors also had guest spots on “Party Down.”)

“Veronica Mars” ended on a pretty dark, ambiguous note (which we kind of liked) after three seasons. A tantalizing look at Thomas’ pitch for a fourth season — with Veronica as a student at the FBI academy — appears on the Season 3 DVD set, but it didn’t happen. But for those three seasons, the handful of us who did watch were enthralled right throughout. You can now see why we were on Soapnet every afternoon.

I’ve learned that ABC Family is finalizing a deal for a second-season renewal of drama The Lying Game. After a shaky start last summer, the show, based on Alloy’s series books, clinched a 12-episode order in September. In Season 1A, Lying Game has done OK, ranking as the No. 3 scripted cable series in January behind ABC Family hits Pretty Little Liars and Switched At Birth. As a sign of the pending renewal, actors from the Warner Horizon/Alloy-produced Lying Game have been invited to ABC Family’s upfront event in New York on Monday.

Q Speaking of the cast, Charisma Carpenter’s character, Rebecca, showed us a new side of Alec this season. You two have really great onscreen chemistry. What has it been like working with her, and how do you think that’s changed your character on the show?

A. Pasdar It’s a tough question to come up against a character like Alec. Charisma, she’s got a lot of moxie. She got stones, as my father would say. It’s fun to work with her because she can—I tend to be somewhat unpredictable and she can roll with it. She makes me better, which I think probably is the best thing that I can say about anybody. I feel confident that when we get done with our scene, it’s going to be better than it was before we started it. We lifted off the page and she’s wonderful to work with.

Q: As actors you’ve both been able to showcase your great comedic timing in other roles, but how was it playing that vibe against one another in this episode?

JM: It was brilliant. I think we both instinctively knew where the drama was, where the horror was and where the comedy was. From watching her performance she understands very well to play the comedy, the horror and the drama equally. You just have to commit and make it real for yourself. For me, when you get into that marital spat stuff, don’t hold back. Be the fool. It’s people arguing in public so it can be really funny.

How much have you been loving Charisma Carpenter (Rebecca) on The Lying Game? Her story is so mysterious and juicy, and Charisma is such an amazing actress!

On the night of the country club’s Black and White Ball for junior members, Emma finds herself on the outside looking in, and Ethan must put up a facade in order to protect her. Charisma Carpenter will reprise her role as Lacy (Jason Statham’s girlfriend) in The Expendables 2, the sequel to the successful 2010 movie The Expendables, the Spanish actress tells Latina.com exclusively. “I’m thrilled to be back with the boys and to be working with iconic actors,” Charisma said. “My son thinks I’m the coolest mom ever!”

Carpenter, who’s best known for her role as popular high school student (and all-around badass) Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, can currently be seen in a recurring role on ABC Family’s hit show, The Lying Game.

Charisma confirmed this news on Twitter, adding that she found out about three weeks ago, starts filming in a couple of days and will be working with the whole group of actors.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Charisma Carpenter has been cast in a recurring role on ABC Family’s The Lying Game, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

The series stars Alexandra Chando as separated-at-birth twins Sutton and Emma, who swap places unbeknownst to their friends and family. Carpenter will play Rebecca “Annie” Sewell, the estranged sister of Phyllis Chamberlain (Sydney Barrosse) and aunt of Sutton/Emma’s best friend, Char (Kirsten Prout). Rebecca’s return to town after many years brings back old memories — and secrets — that Alec Rybak (Adrian Padsar) and Ted Mercer (Andy Buckley) would like to keep in the past.

Carpenter, who recently appeared on an episode of Supernatural, begins her arc in the show’s midseason premiere, which is slated to air in early January.

Buffy/Angel alumni James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter are set to conjure up some intense marital strife when they guest-star on The CW’s Supernatural this Friday — and TVLine has an exclusive clip from the genre-gasmic episode.

In “Shut Up, Dr. Phil,” Carpenter plays Maggie, a real w-i-t-c-h who is extremely toil-and-troubled by an indiscrection of her husband Don’s. To that end, she’s been acting out a bit with her sorcery skills. As Don points out in this scene, the far-out goings-on have not gone unnoticed by a certain pair of “FBI agents.”

“Hunters, sweetheart,” Carpenter’s sexy spellcaster corrects her spouse. “That’s what they are.”

Sam and Dean had better hurry up said hunt, because based on how this art gallery confrontation ends, Maggie’s witchy worst is yet to come!
